Lemon Ginger Scones

My friend Mary of Popsicles and Sandy Feet in really cold and snowy Connecticut is forming a support group. Those who can't stop baking from Joanne Chang's new book, Flour. The book was sold out for some time on Amazon (it's back in stock now), but I found a copy last night at my local bookstore. Whoo hoo!

I immediately went home, threw on some PJs and curled up with this bestseller. It's really pretty and practically every page is tagged! I love that every recipe has scale measurements too! :)

This morning I made the Lemon Ginger Scones. The recipe makes 10 scones but I scooped them out with a small ice cream scoop and got 23 small scones.

While warm, a lovely lemon glaze is poured on top. I used my dad's Meyer lemons. Yum!

I think I'd have to join Flour Anonymous, too. (I'm just glad I don't live near enough to Flour 1, 2 or 3 to go there more than once in a while.) I've made the buttermilk scones and the oatmeal scones from this book - both excellent - and the apple snacking spice cake, which is amazing. These might have to be next.

@The Path Traveled Um, no one should have that data. ha ha. There are almost 2 sticks of butter in this and 1/2 cup of heavy cream. I wouldn't count calories on this baby.

BTW - loving the photography too. The texture between the scones, the lemon glaze, the plate they're sitting on and the table the plate is sitting on...all just fabulous textures...

Sign me up for Flour anonymous! I was at the book release for the book when I lived in Boston. Joanne Chang is simply the sweetest person. Now that I'm in CT I have to make my BF hide the book from me or I'd be eating sweet treats morning, noon, and night.

I have heard nothing but great things about that cookbook. I tried to get it from the library but apparently everyone else is trying to do the same and the wait list is 21 people long! I guess I have a while to wait :-)

OK - this is why I love you girl. I was about to make these today and could not find crystallized ginger at my local store. I am leaving them for next weekend and now that they got your seal of approval, I can't not make them. But my dad doesn't have a meyer lemon tree so mine may not taste as good as yours.

I made the Coconut Lime Tart and it was to die and go to heaven good!! The filling was so creamy I could not believe it. That book is the best!

Besides the glaze, did you notice much of a difference in taste/texture compared to the La Brea ginger scones you posted? Which one do you like better?

You've made a lot of meyer lemon desserts. Can you share what your favorites are? I just got a huge box of meyer lemons from my mom's tree in CA.

@elizabeth Elizabeth, Unfortunately, I have a terrible taste memory. I think the La Brea Bakery is more gingery. However, the lemon glaze is lovely on this one. I enjoy them both! - mary

@elizabeth I love everything meyer lemon! :) The LA Times upside down meyer lemon cake is good as well as the Martha Stewart lemon curd cake. I'm going to do a Lemon Week next week on the blog! :) - mary

I made the glazed lemon cakes from Everyday Food and they were good, although they turned out flat-topped for me at altitude. I came across this recipe for lemon buttermilk bars and was wondering if it might come close to your beloved surfas bars, but probably not. Those lavender lemon bars sound great! Hope you get and share the recipe sometime.
