Brrr-ownies - Tuesdays with Dorie

Brrr-ownies - Tuesdays with Dorie
Brrr-ownies with York Peppermint Patty Pieces

For this week's Tuesdays with Dorie selection, Karen of Welcome to our Crazy Blessed Life selected Brrr-ownies of Dorie's book, Baking: From My Home to Yours.

Brrr-ownies - Tuesdays with Dorie
I misread the instructions and picked up Peppermint Pattie Pieces instead of bites or the full-size patties. How did the Peppermint Patty grow into such an empire of products? Anyway, the pieces are like little M&Ms and are blue and white (or, in my World Cup speak, Argentina...Yes, I'm suffering from withdrawals from the Cup).

Chopping these suckers up can only be described as "Shooting candies all over the kitchen." People, they move, they move on their own. Eventually, I had to grab them individually and chop them, then threw them into the batter.

The verdict? I really wish I had the bites because that would have much more minty flavor. I love mint and the pieces don't have much. I mean, the insides aren't even "mint" color - it is brown and chocolately. As if.

So, I'll try these again with the proper ingredients.

  3. I made the Brrr-ownies once and my co-workers and I all agreed--they tasted like toothpaste! I actually like mint-flavoured toothpaste (I used to eat it out of the tube as a kid), but it was a bit much, even for me.

It's the only Dorie Greenspan recipe I've tried that wasn't a resounding success.

  5. I almost bought these, but then picked up the wrong bag and bought the big ones instead. Too bad they don't have red in there too - 'cool' patriotic brrrrrrrrrrownies.

Mine didn't photograph nearly as well as yours.

  6. I have seen those pieces in the store, but never tried them because what I like about Peppermint Patties is the actual minty filling. I bet chopping them was really fun.
They look festive- too bad they weren't your favorite!

  7. I 'misread' the recipe as well, using the bites. Only I didn't chop them up; just through them in whole. They actually turned out fine.

  13. hahaha!!! I laughed so hard when I visualized you trying to chop those candies and them shooting all over the kitchen. I love the colors in these but I'm sorry they weren't as minty as you wanted.

  14. The blue and white pieces are so fun looking! Though I can imagine chopping them up individually must have been a bit of an aggravating experience.

  15. I will say that the blue does look a bit odd. Still, as long as they taste good!

  17. Waaaaat? I used the York pieces too and I had no idea this wasn't what I was supposed to buy until I read your post! I did think it was a little odd that they were blue... Oh jeez I need to start reading the recipes more carefully! I still thought they were delicious though. And I thought the pieces were addicting on their own! Glad I didn't try to chop them up!

  18. I used the little pieces, too, but I wouldn't have dreamed of chopping them up. They were so slippery! You should get a medal for that TWD effort, girl!
