Chocolate Chip Drop Scones
Today is the last day of National Library Week on the Food Librarian blog! (Sure, NLW actually goes til Saturday, but I gotta rest!)Thanks for all your nice comments about libraries! They are really inspiring. We are all facing tough times, and it is great to hear that you appreciate your local library. Did you know that one easy way to support your library is by Going. To. The. Library. People love statistics, and high circulation and visits to the library really say a lot. So, please visit your library and check it out (get that pun? Yeah, library humor ain't so great...I'll stick to baking.)
I made some easy-peasy Chocolate Chip Scones. Most of my baking is done before work; I'm a morning person and wake up at some crazy hour. But, hey, it's morning and I don't have time to fuss. Thus, the Drop Scone. No forming in triangles, just scoop, drop and bake (and take a shower while they bake! :)

Today's library thing is WorldCat and Interlibrary Loan. Sometimes, your local library just doesn't have the book you want. So, here is a suggestion. Look up the book in WorldCat - a global collection of library catalogs. You can see if a nearby library has the item...perhaps it is worth the drive. If not, look into your library's Inter Library Loan (ILL) program. ILL is a worldwide system of borrowing books from other libraries. You start the process at your local library (there is usually a nominal fee). Even if your local library has a small collection, ILL can bring you books from all over the world!

Recipe:
Chocolate Chip Drop Scones

Adapted from Bon Appétit, December 2000
Original recipe yields 6 triangle scones. I got 18 small drop scones.
2 cups unbleached all-purpose flour
1/3 cup sugar
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
6 tablespoons (3/4 stick) chilled unsalted butter, diced
1 teaspoon (packed) grated lemon peel (I skipped this)
3/4 cup miniature semisweet chocolate chips
3/4 cup chilled buttermilk
1 large egg yolk
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Glaze: Milk and 2 T sugar
1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
2. Line with Silpat or parchment two baking sheets.
3. In a large bowl, mix together flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda and salt.
4. In a small mixing bowl or your measuring cup, blend together buttermilk, egg yolk and vanilla. Set aside.
4. Cut up cold butter into small pieces and add to the flour mixture. (If you are adding the lemon zest, add here). Using your fingertips, rub in butter until the mixture is sandy or like rice grains.
5. Mix in the mini chocolate chips
6. Pour buttermilk mixture over the flour mixture and mix until dough comes together. Do not overmix. Dough will be moist and soft.
7. If you want to make triangle scones, gather the dough and press out on floured surface into an 8-inch round. Cut into 6 wedges.
8. If you want to make drop scones, use a scooper to scoop dough onto lined baking sheets.
9. Brush tops of scones with milk and sprinkle with sugar.
10. Bake at 400 degrees for 18-20 minutes until golden brown. (Mine were small so they baked in 18 minutes).

ReplyDeleteThe library is one of my favorite places to go, I am a bookworm and I love to cuddle up in a corner with my favorite book and just take in the smell of old books. I always feel at peace when I am in the library, kind of like I do when I cook, everything just kind of melts away!
ReplyDeleteThe scones look delicious. I always wake up early too and have often made scones like this myself. Just lump the dough onto the baking tray and then eat warm with jam and fingers. Yum! Mashed banana works well with the choc chips too.

Our regular library, that is within walking distance, is closed for remodeling until late this spring. There is a brand new library about a 10 min drive away. There are people in the town I live in that this is too far!!! I call those people crazy. I can't imagine a week without visiting the library at least once.

ReplyDeleteOne of my favorite uses for my local library is to preview cookbooks. I'm lucky to have access to the NYPL system so I can get pretty much any cookbook that's been out at least a year. That way I can test a recipe from the book and then decide if I'd like to buy it.
ReplyDeleteYum. I've been on what I feel like is the world's largest chocolate kick for a couple of weeks now, and I keep waiting to get past it but no such luck. These chocolate chip scones look amazing!

I am always requesting books and the nice librarians find them and have them waiting for me when I arrive...I feel guilty about making them my personal bookfinders, but with two short people clinging to me, it makes things much simpler for me.

ReplyDeleteWe're heading to our library for story hour in an hour. We've had a long lasting love affair with our local library. We donate all our unused hardcover books, our MOMS Club had a benefit garage sale & raised $500 for our library just last month, and I donate all my unused cookbooks there. Our library means so much to our family and to our community.

ReplyDeletewe didn't go to camp in the summer as a kid growing up in LA in the 1970s -- I just went to the library. I knew that library like that back of my hand. I still recall where my favorite books were! they later rebuilt it/renovated it, and I have refused to go in. this summer, since my daughter has started to read, really read, I'm going to take her to the library .... which is a drive - I cannot wait until they finish building the library in our neighborhood!

ReplyDeleteI love being able to go online, select a book and put a hold on it, getting an email when it is available and walking in, grabbing it and going (when I've got kids or much to do). And I love that I can get it from our local communities too without making the drive.
I have yet to make scones but those look so tempting! This weekend will have to be a baking weekend, I think.

I attended a very small, private college in Podunk, USA. It had a very small library to go with it. Interlibrary loan got me through grad school! It's amazing, and so many people don't know about it! Thanks for your Library Week (and not just for the giveaways!)...you're doing a great job spreading the word about the wonderful world of public libraries!

(In my opinion all the best articles are on the bottom of the ALD page) Anyway, I love your blog. I have two passions (well ok 3) in life: baking, librarianship and my family (who love my baking). ReplyDeleteLove your blog and site. I'm with all these other folks about their library. Next to baking, my library is my next love. I bake for my librarians every trip. They love getting treats and I love sharing with them. They even take care of my containers until I return and pick them up. I agree we need to support our library more than ever. It is so sad when I hear of an area where libraries are closing due to lack of funds. Luckily I'm in an area that really loves their librarians and makes sure they stay with us.
