Easter Jello

Easter Jello!

Food Librarian - Easter Jello
Easy Peasy Easter Treat from 3 ingredients and a level refrigerator

My new oven is arriving today! Yippee!

Here is an easy no-bake Easter treat:

1. Jello.
2. Sweetened Condensed Milk.
3. Knox Gelatin.

For each layer:
3 ounces of Jello. (3 oz is a small 4-serving box. Blue and Purple flavors come in larger 6 oz. boxes - I use my scale and weigh out 3 oz or just measure half the package.

1 full or 1/2 package of Knox gelatin. For mine, I used 1 package. Next time, I would decrease this to 1/2 a package. My jello was kinda stiff. It ain't going anywhere. So, it's up to you - I was making up this recipe as I went along.

1 cup boiling water

Mix until totally dissolved.

In a separate glass measuring cup (or bowl), empty 1 can of sweetened condensed milk (don't use evaporated milk, 1 can is about 1 cup of milk). Add enough boiling water to make 2 cups of liquid.

Add 1/2 cup of the milky mixture to the dissolved colored jello.

Pour into pan and let set for about 30 minutes (depending on how much gelatin you use and if you let the mixture cool a bit before pouring). Make sure your refrigerator is level! :)

Continue for other colors. You can make up to 4 layers with the 2 cups of milky mixture.

I used this garnishing tool to make the crinkly cuts. Cute, huh? Picked it up cheap at my local restaurant supply place.

I used blue, purple and green Jello flavors (I think that translates into blueberry, grape and lime, but they all taste the same to me!) I was going to add pink or yellow, but it got too tall and I was tired. :)

Happy Easter to you and your family!

Food Librarian - Easter Jell-O

Next week, I hope to make a kosher/vegetarian gelatin with agar agar. Agar Agar is made from seaweed and used in a lot of Asian gelatin desserts (in Japanese cooking, it is called Kanten). Don't know if it'll be Kosher for Passover, but it won't have animal products...unless I make bacon jello (just kidding)! Also, next week is National Library Week so come on back for giveaways and all things library!

  16. I have never been that partial to jello, but this is so pretty and enticing! Plus, it has one of my most favorite things in the world in it, sweetened condensed milk. How can you go wrong? How fun and creative! I love the ubercool crinkle texture.

  20. Definitely post when you try the agar agar! I've been wanting to make rainbow jello again, but since becoming vegetarian, I would need to use agar agar instead of gelatin. I'm interested to see how it turns out!

  36. oooh awesome

it looks like those cool erasers you get at the elementary school book fair!

i just stumbled upon this when i wanted to confirm my condensed milk/jello cookies recipe that i found in my pantry

  37. I'm a little confused with this, I've never done anything with Jello before. Do you pour the first color, let it cool and then do another layer on top until finished? Or do you do them all separate and then stack them?

    ReplyDelete
  38. @nevermore82 Sorry if the instructions weren't clear to you. You pour one layer, let it chill and firm up, then add the next layer and let that chill and firm up.

  39. Ooo Thank you, I might just have to try this for Easter this year. Thank you for clearing that up for me. (I'm a newbie at the whole cooking/baking thing)(ps. I am nevermore, I don't know how it changed)

  40. The colors are divine and we thought this recipe would be a lot of fun for kids, so we shared it on our site!

  41. when using the 3 oz jello packages did you use a 9x13 pan or something different?

  42. I LOVE Jello and have very fond memories of my mom making three different flavours and then using little cookie cutters to make different shapes. I will definetly being trying these!

    Thanks so much,

  43. I love your jello recipies! I've made the 7 Layered Jello and the Broken Glass one and they worked perfectly. However I have just tried this Easter one and when I mixed the condensed milk mixture with the jello it 'curdled'. What did I do wrong?
    Natasha

  44. @Tasha #47 Natasha, (Sorry for the delay...your comment slipped by) Hum, not sure what happened to make it curdle. Was it fresh? I'm not sure why this happened. Sorry I don't have more info on this one. - mary

  45. I was just coming with the curdle question, too! I did a layer of purple and that was fine, but then I tried blue and it curdled. I tried with another package of blue and it did it again, then I tried green and it curdled. I used ingredients I just barely got at the grocery store. I'm wondering if Jello has changed their formulation.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Hm. I was hoping to find an answer to the curdling too. Mine curdled with the berry blue and lemon so far and the blue layer in the fridge has started separating into a milky layer and plain blue layer :( I'm thinking about letting the next batch of jello/gelatin mixture cool before adding the milky stuff in. I think that'll solve the problem.
